Vice President Kamala Harris is headed to Prince George’s County on Friday to campaign alongside Angela Alsobrooks, the county executive and a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate.
Harris and Alsobrooks are expected to mark National Gun Violence Awareness Day and discuss public safety at the event.
Harris and Alsobrooks have a longstanding relationship, as both are former prosecutors and they’ve supported each other’s campaigns. When Alsobrooks won the Democratic primary for Senate in May, Harris responded with a congratulatory message on social media that called her a “dear friend.”
Harris and President Joe Biden are campaigning for reelection against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump. Harris is expected to blast Trump for inaction on gun violence when he was president.
Alsobrooks, meanwhile, is facing off against Republican nominee Larry Hogan, the former two-term governor, for Maryland’s open U.S. Senate seat.
Hogan has touted endorsements from law enforcement organizations, including the State Law Enforcement Officers Labor Alliance, which represents state troopers, natural resources police officers and others; and the International Union of Police Associations, a union based in Florida.
Alsobrooks has stressed her experience as state’s attorney for Prince George’s County, boasting a drop in violent crime during her tenure. Crime declined in Maryland overall during her two terms in office, according to a Banner analysis, but the jurisdiction with the state’s most precipitous decline was Prince George’s County.
